The second of the “Little Brown Book” add-ons (and the first actual campaign) was Supplement II: Blackmoor. This work showed a different take on the rules from Gygax’s Greyhawk campaign, though how much was original Blackmoor is a subject for debate. New classes, rules for hit locations, and a lot on waterborne adventures were provided in this work for the aspiring DM! It also contained the very first TSR published adventure, the infamous Temple of the Frog. The hosts put this D&D expansion work under their scrutiny and see how this book can be of use for DMs and players of the various Classic versions of D&D!

Episode 69: “Save versus Role Playing”
The SoD team take a step back and examine the fundamental building
blocks of role playing as a gaming style and type. D&D both pioneered and
defined this gaming genre for generations to come, but how much of it was by
design and how much by happy accident?

Unlike prior “specials”, this episode the fab 4 DMs take the entire episode to interview James Ward, one of the iconic figures of the early days of the RPG industry. We talk to Jim about his prior work in Classic D&D as well as his new projects that would be of interest to the Classic community.

This episode we welcome our new regular host DM Jim to the Podcast! A good thing too as we delve into another product given to us thanks to the OSR! Unlike most adventures or settings published for Classic D&D-style RPGs, this book is unusual in that it states that this work is made for solo play. Magic Window and invisible ink modules notwithstanding, this is an area not often tread in D&D, and so the hosts take a look at Ruins of the Undercity by Patrice Crespy. Be sure to listen to the end of the episode for our new Itunes Review Contest!

The “Attack of the Clones!” series concludes with the coverage of Dark Dungeons, the retro clone that emulates the last of the Basic Box set series, edited by Frank Mentzer and later compiled into the Rules Cyclopedia. This game is released as a free pdf by Gratis Games and provides perhaps the most comprehensive set of Classic Dungeons & Dragons rules before the elimination of the line. Does it faithfully cover its print game? What changes were made? Will DM Glen ever stop grinning about the RC? All will be revealed!

Among the various influences of Classic Dungeons & Dragons were novels, mythology, and movies. We discuss which movies are “more” D&D than others in our opinions. What monsters work, what magic items can be modified, and plot hooks all round out this latest Adventure of Save or Die!

Welcome to the first Save or Die! Adventure of 2013! This episode we take a look at the first of the original “Little Brown Book” supplements: Greyhawk. Not only did this gem give some insight into Gary Gygax’s view of the D&D game, but also laid the foundation for much of what would become “Canonical” D&D in the future. A d20 to hit, variable polyhedron dice for damage, spell limitations, and such like…its first given in Supplement I. The SoD crew looks at this little booklet with the help of DM Jim Wampler, who currently plays in Tim Kask’s own OD&D Greyhawk campaign. Finally the SoD-casters consider if Greyhawk can work in other versions of Classic D&D and how well it can be imported to your own game.
