The adventure was Curse of Xanathon for the OD&D Expert Rules. the characters are in the Northern Reaches and encounter a norse style settlement who’s lord is under the influence of a evil cleric of the nearby nation of Ethengar horse-clans.
I ran this adventure for a 3.5 Mystara group back in 2004 and it was a good time. Over 3 sessions they explored the plot and never had the bad experience you were talking about. Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy it.
I guess the thing about using published adventures is really that you have to make it your own and make use the stuff that your group will be into while skipping over the rest. I tend to link plots of lots of published adventures and I’ve gotten a lot of compliments from my groups over the past 20 years or so.
